Maude A Brown's Obituary
BROWN, Maude Arthur of Clearwater passed away peacefully on September 10, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 12, 1916 in Cranford New Jersey. She graduated Stephens College in Columbia Missouri in 1938. She moved to Clearwater from Ithaca NY to marry Douglas Brown on December 9, 1939. Maude was a Florida pioneer and she showed that spirit by being the first woman to solo pilot a Piper Cub aircraft at the Clearwater Air Park. She also was the lead in many plays at the Clearwater Little Theater, now known as the Francis Wilson Little Theater. During WWII she gave a 3 act monologue in costume as “Victoria Regina” to help raise money for “Bundles for Britain”. Maude was very proud of her 15 minute radio show called “This and That, From Here to There.” In 1955 she helped start the Clearwater and Dunedin chapters of The Rainbow Assembly for Girls where she served as deputy for 2 years. Maude also taught Sunday school in Cavalry Baptist church and was superintendent of the young people’s Department under Pastor O.E. Burton. Maude was also secretary for the Florida United Numismatists (F.U.N.)a state coin organization from 1986 to 1988. She loved her family and friends and she will be missed by all who knew her. She is predeceased in death by her husband of 60 years, William Douglass “Doug” Brown. Survivors include Daughter Sarah Brown Caudell (Glenn); Son, Steve Brown (Susan); Grandchildren, Amy Charles, Ben Charles, Robert Brown, Jennifer Brown Walker and six great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Saturday September 13, 2014 at Moss Feaster Belcher Rd, 693 S. Belcher RD, Clearwater Fl. The family asks in lieu of flowers please make donations to Suncoast Hospice.
