During one of the many times we sat down and talked the subject came up about how long we had known each other. We concluded that it must have been around 1993. Kathy and I lived in Peru at the time with our children Meghan and Brendan. We came to Florida every year to visit Kathy's dad, who became Reggie's neighbor after he moved from across the street.
Reggie was an exceptional good neighbor. When Bill Desmond, Kathy's father, was no longer able to take care of himself, Reggie took over and looked after him, even chased him to make sure he was taking his medicine! And many other things he did for him. When we moved to Florida ourselves 2010 we reminisced about those days and had some good laughs about those crazy times. But before that Pa Desmond and Reggie came to visit us in Holland, where we moved after Peru. That was in 1999.
Reggie also came to Bogota, Colombia, our stationing after Holland. Some adventure! Even though he did not speak any Spanish, he fooled some Colombians who were trying to get some money out of this Yankee Tourist. That was Reggie!
His last international trip was to Guatemala in 2007 for Christmas and New Year's.
In Florida we were neighbors for a few years. Shared many a meal. Celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas. We sat for many hours on our front porch or by the pool talking and sharing memories. Having a beer or a whiskey.
Reggie had all his abilities in those years. It was only the last two years that his memory started failing him. We were lucky that we could be of some help to him, repaying to him what he had done for us and our family.
A great gentleman with a great sense of humor. A dear friend who always shared. We miss him.
Kathy and Teunis
