I served with Warren aboard the Nautilus in the late 60s. He was a "Nuke Puke" and I was a "Forward Puke". (Half the boat was nuclear trained and generally worked aft in the engine room or the reactor room, while the other half who were not nuclear trained worked generally in the forward areas - torpedo room, communications room, etc. The two names each group used for the other were used lovingly.)
Though we worked in different area of the boat, our interactions in the crew's mess during meals and during recreation times - poker, movie nights, etc., led me to gain a tremendous amount of respect for Warren. He was a natural leader whose quiet, intelligent approach to problems - large and small - made him a mentor to so many of us. He was a shipmate that so many of us sought to emulate.
I learned to respect him even more as I served with him in leadership roles in the Nautilus Alumni Association. His advice and guidance were invaluable.
We have lost a great shipmate, a great friend, and a great American patriot. We will miss him sorely.
Rest in Peace, Warren! And keep the after-life boat in tip top shape for those shipmates who will follow you!
