William P. Powers' Obituary
William (Bill, aka Mickey) Patrick Powers, age 94, of Dunedin, FL died July 13, 2017. Bill was born in Chester, N.Y. on July 3, 1923. He moved with his family to Bridgeport, CT in 1941. He was in the Merchant Marines from 1943 – 1950 and enjoyed his travels around the world; he sure did love telling stories of those days.
Bill met his wife Ruth Helen Brown at Bridgeport Hospital where she worked as a Registered Nurse. They were married in 1952 and had four children. Bill worked for Sikorsky Aircraft from 1953 until his retirement in 1985 and he and Ruth then moved to Palm Harbor, FL. Bill spent much time golfing and listening to Dixieland jazz music; he and Ruth were members of the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society for many years and they attended numerous jazz festivals and made many friends there. He volunteered over the years as a driver for the Red Cross and at Mease Countryside Hospital. Bill also loved playing his favorite game, cribbage, which he learned in the Merchant Marines and continued to play throughout his life.
Survivors include his three daughters, Patricia and her partner Pat Kelso of Oakland, CA, Kathleen of Essex, CT, and Mary Smith and her husband Tim of Plymouth, ME; his daughter-in-law Betty Powers; his two grandchildren, Jessica Miller and her husband Rory and Blake Powers and his wife Jill, all of Stratford; two great-grandchildren, Lauren Powers and Kenzie Miller; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth and son James. A memorial service will be held at Moss Feaster Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Dunedin, FL on Thursday, July 20, gathering of friends – 3:30-4:30; service @ 4:30. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Suncoast Hospice, Clearwater.
